Three cheers for the slasher period...on its period! (3.5 stars)

HIP HIP HOORAY! Writer/director Kerry Beyer is your new bloody Cheer Captain. That dude is crazy cool, and so is his latest herkey jerkey homage to old school 80's horror. For all you slasher/comedy fans, this movie is a solid excuse to avoid doing housework or bathing. SPIRIT CAMP has to be the best slasher with a short skirt and pom-poms made in the last twenty minutes.

So, what's the recipe for a good independent horror film? Hot naked chicks and lots of blood is usually a wonderful place to start. The story itself here is pretty standard--a group of diverse, young, and sexy ladies are attending a cheerleader camp. Along with the pre-menstrual rivalry brewing, there happens to be a homicidal lunatic lurking somewhere neaby. So eventually the female squad has to unite for survival.

This movie has a nice dose of laughs. Of course, cheerleaders are easy targets to exploit when it comes to comedy, and it honestly never seems to get old...

"Can we get tanned by sitting close to the campfire? The sun really is just a ball of fire, right?" (groan)

Well, these sharp as a spoon ladies eventually make nice targets for an axe-wielding madman. While they are busy sneaking booze and daydreaming about Mr. Right, the deranged maniac starts to pick them off. This features some nice old school props and makeup for the kills, which all look fairly gruesome. Nothing ground-breaking, but still it's some good messy fun.

Overall, there isn't really much new ground covered here with Spirit Camp, but hey, if it ain't broke....

Fun, original, the perfect antidote to the dull slasher rehashes

I was at Texas Frightmare Weekend and met the cast and crew who were present. I bought the DVD on a lark, not sure whatto think, but the folks were so funny to talk to that I felt good about spending a little money at their booth. They really had a lot of chemistry in the group, and I can tell they like working together - great folks.

I popped the DVD into my laptop, and it was actually well done. Good quality packaging is as good as any mainstream DVD, and the camera work and acting are surprisingly well done - I've got several Indie movies that have some spots with some pretty rough workmanship, but this was much better. Not perfect, but about the best Indie Horror genre movie I've ever seen.

Special effects are quite good, and they thankfully didn't rely on computers to deliver cheesy graphics that don't work. They made good use of old-fashioned effects, just right camera angles, good lighting, and audible effects with really good timing. Again, not perfect, but to study how they did it, it's obvious it was planned ahead and timed and done quite well - far better than B movie grade.

The actresses are pretty, some guys will watch for them alone. These guys won't be disappointed, but there's actually more to this one than just blood and gratuitous nudity. It's fun, like a roller-coaster that takes the viewer on a bit of a wild ride, with some surprises, startles, cringing moments, laughs, hold-your-breath spells, and fun chuckles as the viewer appreciates the way this movie does give a respectful nod to the classic slasher flicks, with tongue in cheek - but still manages to hold its own in the originality department.

So, just when I thought slasher flicks were predictable and lacked originality, I was pretty sure this one was going to be like all the others - but low-budget. I was wrong, because it had plenty of twists and turns, and the quality of the work was anything but cheesy and amateur. I'm sure we'll all see these people doing more and improving as they go.

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. I gave my copy (autographed by cast and crew) to my friend who owns a hearse, which happens to be the first hearse one of the actresses sat in. I need to buy another copy!

Fun, Fun Movie.

One has to go into this movie knowing it won't be a spectacular horror show. That doesn't mean it isn't a wonderful entertaining movie. It clearly lets you know it's a horror comedy. It has some great throw backs to the 80's slashers. Plus the name of the lake and the head lady at the camp. See if you can guess what movie the names are from. Personally, I got a "Sleepaway Camp 2" feel to the movie. A lot of kill scenes, and plenty of laughs in between. The price is high on the DVD, but it's worth it some in the long run. Since apparently no one knows about this movie. It's a shame, but kind of neat at the same time. Knowing you got a decent fun movie that no one else knows about.

You'll Laugh Till You Cry

This is the funniest slasher film I have ever seen - and it totally made up for the slew of bad comedies I have seen recently.

"Spirit Camp" is totally a throwback to 1980's horror films like Friday 13th and Sleepaway Camp. If you hate those two films, then don't rent or buy this one. But if you like laughs with your horror films, this one is right up your alley.

It basically involves some teenagers who go away to a cheerleading camp in the woods, and murder/sex/drugs et.al occur and hilarity ensues. There are really no surprises, just indie horror at its best. With tons of funny one-liners and just the right amount of blood/gore, this is a film that adds to the genre but does not seem cliche because it doesn't take itself too seriously.

What a good time I had watching this film - highly entertaining!

Is not bad.. Is not great.. is to EXPENSIVE!

As I said this it's not a bad movie but is too expensive for what it is. I did like the movie but I did not like what I paid! If I were you I would wait a little longer!
