I know this CD was released long ago but I am shocked by all the good to great reviews it gets. I have this CD and while every song is very good I can not recommend a CD with ten tracks that clocks in at under 24 minutes. I thought my CD player was broken when i first saw the length of the whole CD. Somebody should re-release this soundtrack and add about 15 more songs to it."Stand By Me" (movie sequence version)
I took a close look at the movie end credits to see what songs had been left off the "official original soundtrack" music CD. After trawling the Internet and a local Indie/used CD store, I came up with the following:
1)Red River Rock (Johnny & The Hurricanes, 1959)-Stands in for the orchestral version of "Stand By Me" as the newspaper headline "Local Attorney Chris Chambers Killed" appears.
2)Rockin' Robin (Bobby Day, 1958)
3)Sorry (I Ran All The Way Home) (The Impalas, 1959)
4)Mr. Lee
5)Rebel Rouser (Duane Eddy, 1958)-Stands in for "The Ballad of Paladin"
6)Great Balls of Fire
7)Whispering Bells
8)Let The Good Times Roll
9)Book of Love (The Monotones, 1957)
10)Lollipop
11)Everyday
12)Come Go With Me
13)Come Softly To Me (The Fleetwoods. 1959)
14)Hushabye (The Mystics. 1959)
15)Get A Job
16)Yakety Yak
17)Stand By Me
40 minutes, 40 seconds
In 1959, I was a tad younger than the characters in the movie, but I lived in a small town and roamed freely to places forbidden and dangerous as they did. My older sister was the 45RPM single collector. but the Doo Wop music of the era remains stuck in memory. I wouldn't mind visiting the town of the 1950's as an adult, but until/unless that becomes possible, this soundtrack takes me down the hill to our little town. The only drawback is its brevity
This is a great soundtrack with a collection of great songs. The only thing that keeps it from the 5th star is the fact that it is extremely short.
With 10 songs coming from the motown machine of the 60's the whole thing comes in at just about 35 minutes. Extremely short by today's standards. But, if that's all you've got, that's all you've got. The pinnacle song of course is Ben E. King's Stand By Me. A great anthem that sums up the heart and soul of the movie well. I do kind of wish there was some original material on this disc as that would have given a better flavor and personalized the soundtrack a little more. It might have given it a little more length as well.
A good disc for the collection.
Stand By Me review
Excellent product, just what I had in cassette many years ago. Great and rapid delivery toostand by me
This CD was purchased as a gift. The recepient loved it. Thankyou for sending it quickly.Amazon.com
This is one of those soundtracks that may have worked better during the vinyl era. Most of the tunes here (each and every one a '50s rock classic) are likely already in the CD collections of fans of this kind of music. That's probably the case with Buddy Holly, Ben E. King, the Del Vikings (two cuts here), the Coasters, Jerry Lee Lewis, and perhaps Shirley & Lee. It's probably not true of the Chordettes' "Lollipop," but that tune is used to such great effect in this terrific flick that you may just want to watch the video again. You can't go wrong with 10 feel-good classics. --Bill Holdship
